The Taproot Foundation started in San Francisco in 2001 to meet a social need: Our communities’ biggest challenges are met through the work of nonprofit organizations that are creative, but under-resourced in the marketing, design, technology, management, and strategic planning resources they need to deliver on their missions.

After over a decade, the Bay Area office is proud to have partnered with over 2,500 professionals to deliver pro bono services to over 500 nonprofits. Whether you’re a nonprofit or a professional, check out the below information on how to get involved!

FOR NONPROFITS

Interested in applying for a Service Grant? Be sure to check off each of the following steps. (Ya, ya, ya. It's long. But we promise it will be worth every word!)

SERVICE GRANT PROGRAM CHECKLIST

    • FIRST, CONFIRM YOU MEET TAPROOT'S REQUIREMENTS. We know you’re busy and we don’t want you to spend time filling out an application if we aren’t able to provide you a grant. So double-check the list. Your nonprofit MUST:

      • Be classified as a 501(c)(3), be under the fiscal sponsorship of a 501(c)(3), -or- be a public school
      • Be headquartered in one of the following counties: San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa or Marin counties | Why? We are restricted to working in areas in which we already have pro bono consultants. We love the whole Bay Area, but unfortunately can’t make exceptions here.
      • Have at least 3 full-time employees or at least 8 full-time employees if applying for Human Resources Capacity Build, Performance Management, or Board Recruitment | Why? Service Grant projects are fun, but we aren’t going to lie – they are also hard work. We want to make sure your organization is equipped with enough resources to take on a team of 5 consultants over the course of 6 months.
      • Have an annual budget of at least $350,000 | Why? Similar to the above reason, smaller nonprofits tend to have a much more challenging time finding the resources needed to offer the project.
      • Work within one of our issue areas: health, education, environment, social services, arts
      • NOT promote religious doctrine
      • Have a board ratified strategic plan if applying for any of the following grants:
        • Key Messages & Brand Strategy
        • Visual Identity & Brand Strategy
        • Board Recruitment
        • Strategic Scorecard

    • REVIEW ALL THE DETAILS OF OUR AVAILABLE SERVICE GRANTS AND CHOOSE THE ONE THAT ALIGNS THE CLOSEST WITH YOUR CURRENT NEEDS
Please note: While we welcome applications for all Service Grant types, we are extremely limited in our ability to award the following, highly competitive project types: Key Messages & Brand Strategy, WordPress Website, and Salesforce Implementation. Organizations are encouraged to apply for grants within the Strategy Management and Human Resources practice areas.

    • REVIEW THE TIMELINE FOR EACH GRANT ROUND. Each project runs on the same timeline, so be sure you don’t have any major conflicts or leadership transitions planned during the duration of the project:

    • ATTEND THE QUARTERLY RFP WEBINAR. Our Program Managers lead a webinar each quarter prior to the application deadline to offer more information about our process. The next webinar is not scheduled yet, but you can view the recording from our March round:

      WATCH RECORDING HERE

    • SCHEDULE A CONSULTATION CALL.  Prior to our deadline, we offer 20-minute consultation calls with one of our Program Managers in which you can discuss the specific scope of the project, how to write a strong proposal, how we make grant decisions, and ask any further questions you have. We highly recommend you take advantage of these calls as the data don’t lie – nonprofits who have a call prior to applying submit stronger proposals and are more likely to move forward. Plus, we are just plain fun to talk to. SCHEDULE A CALL HERE

    • NOW, YOU SHOULD FINALLY BE READY TO APPLY!

Next deadline: Monday, June 2 by midnight | APPLY HERE

We encourage eligible grantees from the following funders:
        • JPMorgan Chase – Specifically nonprofits within workforce development or economic development issue areas
        • Blue Shield of California Foundation

WHAT'S THAT YOU SAY? You don’t meet all the requirements above or we don’t offer a Service Grant that meets your needs? Of course we can still help you!

  • Powered by Pro Bono can help you to fully embrace pro bono service and enjoy the benefits without having us tell you what to do. Use our online tools and guidebook to help your organization scope, secure, manage, and scale pro bono on your own. Wow, you look more powerful just thinking about the possibilities!
  • With Google Helpouts, you get real help from real people in real time. It’s real cool (sorry, had to). Taproot offers professional coaching through Helpouts on topics such as team-building, navigating change, and – of course – pro bono!
  • We all know LinkedIn is the best resources for connecting professionals. But did you know they are constantly working to help nonprofits leverage their network? Seriously! They offer Board Member Connect and just launched the Volunteer Marketplace and they are both amazing resources.
