Taproot Foundation Receives the Meta Network 2006 Online Networking Award

WASHINGTON, DC - March 20, 2006 - Taproot Foundation is the 2006 recipient of the Meta Networking Award in honor of Frank Burns. Mr. Burns founded The Meta Network in 1983 and it is now one of the oldest online communities in the world. Each year, the Meta Network makes at least one award to an organization or project that is committed to doing something aligned with the original mission of The Meta Network - closing the gap between the human condition and human potential. The selected organization or project will receive a full year of consulting, services, and access to online media and other tools provided by Group Jazz to enable them to design, launch and implement a network that can play a key role in supporting their purpose.

Founded by Aaron Hurst, the 2006 award recipient Taproot Foundation strengthens nonprofits by engaging business professionals in service. Taproot Foundation is modeled after the pro-bono services practices that have become a core competency of law firms. Nonprofits apply for projects that meet their needs and Taproot Foundation matches them with teams of volunteers from the corporate sector who have the appropriate skills. Taproot Foundation then provides the coordination, tracking and evaluation to make the project successful for everyone involved. For the nonprofit recipient that means professional quality results are delivered on time. For the corporate volunteers success means a sense of accomplishment and the breaking down of barriers between the two groups of professionals.

"We're trying to build a national pro-bono agency," says Hurst. "The only way to address the lomg-term capacity building need in the nonprofit sector is to use human capital rather than financial capital."

Group Jazz supports the work of groups, whether they meet face-to-face, online, or both. By bringing together the best tools, technologies, media, and people, Group Jazz produces great group experiences with powerful results. Group Jazz has worked with corporations, government agencies, and non-profit organizations including IBM, PBS, HP, Merck, National Education Association, and others to support virtual teams, learning cohorts, and collaborative events.

“I’m thrilled that we’ll have an opportunity to work with Taproot and explore ways of leveraging the great work they’re doing with networking technology,” said Lisa Kimball, Executive Producer, Group Jazz.
