The Taproot Foundation’s second office opened in October 2003 in New York. The office leads the Taproot Foundation’s national marketing practice and serves as the regional office for the organization’s efforts on the East Coast.

Michelle Pullaro, Regional Director - East Coast
Michelle joins the Taproot Foundation with 13 years of experience in both the private and nonprofit sectors. As Regional Director, she leads the East Coast region in leveraging volunteers from the business community to deliver high quality capacity building services to local nonprofits.

Previously, Michelle was Chief Operating Officer of Per Scholas, a $5+ million nonprofit organization in New York City’s South Bronx that provides home computers and technology training to families and nonprofits in underserved communities. Michelle was responsible for all marketing, strategic planning, fund development, program design, manufacturing and customer service initiatives, and played an integral role in the merger of a complimentary service organization, Comp2Kids. Following the merger, Michelle developed and executed Comp2Seniors, a program aimed at providing home computers and training to low-income older adults that would otherwise be unable to afford a home computer.

Prior to Per Scholas, Michelle spent 6 years with Automatic Data Processing (ADP) in Sales Management, Corporate Training and Corporate Marketing and over the course of her career was a recipient of numerous awards and distinctions. Michelle attended Columbia University’s Executive Program in Nonprofit Management, earned her MBA from Baruch College’s Zicklin School of Business, where she was a recipient of a NASH Honors Scholarship, and holds a BA from University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Tanya is a successful social entrepreneur with a strong interest in public/private ventures. As the Senior Manager for Corporate Programs, she is responsible for creating a model for making pro bono work part of the ethic of corporate America. She manages our strategic partnership with Time Warner that serves as a pilot of our corporate programs.

Tanya, a New York City native, spent eight years prior to joining Taproot at the Children's Aid Society (CAS) developing innovative programming. As an administrator at CAS, Tanya was responsible for developing countless programs, most notably the Economic Empowerment Initiative (EEI), a financial literacy program for underprivileged families, where her ability to implement exemplary programming in a collaborative approach earned her the Annie E. Casey Award. In addition, she was instrumental in obtaining support from the J.P. Morgan Chase Foundation as well as Deutsche Bank Foundation. Her nonprofit experience began at ASPIRA, where she administered and designed academic projects for at-risk Latino Youth. Tanya's business experience includes work as an analyst at MetLife.

Tanya is bilingual and holds her undergraduate degree in Sociology from New York University and a master's degree, as a Jacob Kaplan Fellow, in Urban Policy Analysis and Management from the New School. She is an alumnus of the Inroads program, co-chairs a corporate advisory committee and is on the Board of Minority Interchange. She was recently accepted into the Coro Leadership Class of 2005 in New York City.

Lara brings over five years of nonprofit program experience to the Taproot Foundation. As Senior Manager of Development, Lara works to ensure the financial stability of the New York office by developing ongoing relationships with foundations, corporations, government agencies, and other funding partners. Prior to her current position, Lara served as Senior Account Manager, managing Taproot Foundation's Service Grant program to deliver consistent, high-quality services to our grantees in New York.

Before joining the Taproot Foundation, Lara was a program coordinator for the International Rescue Committee, a humanitarian organization assisting refugees and victims of oppression and violent conflict. Prior to that post, she was the administrative director for United States Servas and a research associate for the Institute for Urban Environmental Research. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for United States Servas. Lara holds a BA and MA from the George Washington University, with a focus on community and international development.

Blake brings five years of social marketing experience to the Taproot Foundation. As Senior Manager - Programs, Blake oversees the selection and successful execution of the portfolio of grants in New York - ensuring the delivery of consistent, high-quality services to our grantees and fostering a volunteer community of dedicated professionals. He is also responsible for volunteer recruitment and communications in New York and manages all grants related to Taproot Foundation’s corporate partnerships.

Prior to the Taproot Foundation, Blake served as a Campaign Manager at The Advertising Council where he led the creation of PSA campaigns addressing diverse social issues such as after-school programs, AIDS awareness and energy efficiency. He holds a BA from Wake Forest University.

Kandace brings seven years of advertising, marketing, project management and public relations to the Taproot Foundation. In her role as Program Manager, Kandace oversees the selection and successful execution of the New York grant portfolio, ensuring the delivery of consistent high-quality services to our grantees and fostering a thriving volunteer community of dedicated professionals.

Prior to joining the Taproot Foundation, Kandace worked as an Account Supervisor with J. Walter Thompson advertising agency in both the St. Louis and New York markets. She worked with a wide variety of clients in the retail, financial services and technology industries. Her duties included project management, media planning and brand management. Prior to JWT, Kandace worked with Fleishman-Hillard STL and as a Program Manager for tutorial services geared to inner-city students in the St. Louis Public School system. Her nonprofit experience includes brand development for the Boys & Girls Club of America and the creation of a program with the YWCA – Women to Work – which assisted drug rehabilitated individuals reenter the workforce with confidence. Kandace has a BA from Hampton University.

Pauline comes to the Taproot Foundation with a passion for the nonprofit sector and a strong commitment to social change. As a member of the program team, she is responsible for coordinating quarterly grant cycles and providing a high level of service to nonprofit applicants and volunteers. In her development capacity, she supports the Senior Manager of Development to ensure the financial stability of the New York office by developing ongoing relationships with foundations, corporations, government agencies, and other funding partners.

Pauline received a BA in political science from Hunter College, with a minor in philosophy. Prior to joining the Taproot Foundation, Pauline interned at the Vera Institute of Justice where she wrote a communications plan to promote Vera’s innovative research to child welfare agencies around the country. She also served as tutor and workshop facilitator at Kingsborough Community College, where she helped a predominantly immigrant population of students learn college level reading and writing skills. Pauline’s volunteer experience includes a role as Advertising Manager and Publisher Liaison for Logos Journal, a quarterly online publication.


New York Advisory Board
Laurel Scimone Peppino, Chair
Laurel is an Executive Recruiter specializing in media, entertainment and communications. She works with creative minded industry leaders such as Coke, Nike and MTV Networks to identify talent who will help clients navigate the continuing evolution of media convergence and market shifts. Always involved with emerging media and communications, Laurel began her career launching companies such as Ask Jeeves, Pacific Bell At Hand and Kana Communications. She holds a BFA in Advertising Communications from Syracuse University.

Laurel serves as Chair of the Taproot Foundations New York Advisory Board. She has been involved with the New York office since helping to launch the organization locally in 2004.

Michael Bernstein, Vice Chair
Michael is Vice President of Marketing and Client Service for Financial Risk Management (FRM), an international fund of hedge funds. He is responsible for developing FRM’s relationships with investment consultants and supporting the firm’s institutional clients. Prior to joining FRM in 2004, Michael was a marketing and strategy consultant for financial services companies including Mastercard International, JP Morgan Chase and Barclays Global Investors. Earlier in his career, Michael spent four years as a Senior Analyst with Gartner, where he advised corporate executives on marketing, strategy and technology.

Michael serves as Vice Chair of the Taproot Foundation's New York Advisory Board. Previously, he was the founding Chairman of the Taproot Foundation’s National Board. Michael holds a B.A. with distinction from Swarthmore College, where he majored in Comparative Religion. He has passed all three levels of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Program.

Caroline Kim Oh
Caroline joined the iMentor team in 2000 as its first Director of Programs, and was named Executive Director in April 2002. Under Caroline's leadership, iMentor grew to serve 400 new mentor and mentee pairs annually. Prior to iMentor, Caroline was with the Small Business Congress of New York City, a federation of over 60 small business associations advocating the rights of small enterprises. Caroline also managed computing facilities for New York University and was a consultant to the Documentary Heritage Program for the NYS Department of Education and Korean American Small Business Center.

Caroline serves on the Board of Directors of Row New York, an after-school rowing, academic, and self-esteem building program. Caroline also serves on the Board of Youth I.N.C.. Caroline received her M.P.A. from the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University and her B.A. from Cornell University.

Michelle Walsh
Michelle has been Associate of Finance and Real Estate at Latham & Watkins LLP since 2002. Prior to that, Michelle has enjoyed a long tenure in the non-profit world, particularly in the civil rights field. At her first job out of college, she worked with renowned civil rights historian Dr. Clayborne Carson on the Martin Luther King Papers Project. Following that, she managed the estates program in the planned giving department at the American Civil Liberties Union.

Michelle currently serves on the board of the Youth Achievement Association of Ozone Park, Queens and is President of the board at Bedford Place Condominiums. Michelle holds an undergraduate degree in Human Biology at Stanford University and earned a JD/MBA degree from Columbia University in 2002.

Matthew C. Howes
Matthew is currently the Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Sarkissian Mason. Matthew has over eleven years experience providing strategic planning for Fortune 500 firms and new business ventures in Media and Technology. In all, he has launched over a dozen new products and businesses, ranging from Switchboard.com, one of the top 10 most visited websites in 1998, to WebMD™, the largest and most recognized online consumer health portal.

Matthew began his business career as a management consultant at CSC where he helped Open Market introduce the world’s first secure e-commerce technology, and provided strategic technology and media consulting to DuPont, EDS, Morgan Stanley, State Street Bank, Royal Dutch/Shell and many others. In 1998, Matthew was recognized with an Award of Distinction from Information Strategies magazine for his work with WPP’s Research International, the world’s largest ad hoc market research firm. From 2002 to 2003, he helped Carnegie Hall grow their education endowment by $50MM. And in October 2003 he joined Wunderman as Group Director, overseeing channel strategy for Consumer Healthcare clients.

During his MBA studies at Boston College, Matthew completed the Leadership for Change executive program promoting corporate citizenship. He also holds an MFA in Theatre from Brandeis University, and a BA in Media Studies from the University of Houston.

Matthew Klein
Matthew Klein is the Executive Director and first staff person of Blue Ridge Foundation New York. Blue Ridge supports start-up nonprofits, helping to transform innovative ideas into effective and sustainable institutions of social change. Matt's experience prior to Blue Ridge includes work in non-profit management and civil rights law. He helped co-found Leadership, Education, and Athletics in Partnership (LEAP), a Connecticut-based youth development agency, performed legal work with the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., and the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, and served as a law clerk in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York for the Honorable Robert L. Carter, one of the principal litigating attorneys in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education lawsuit.

Matt sits on the Steering Committee of the New York City Youth Funders Network. He also serves as a board member of several nonprofit agencies, including as a founding Board member iMentor and the founding Board Chair of Groundwork, Inc. Matt has been a fellow of the Echoing Green Foundation and the Next Generation Leadership program of the Rockefeller Foundation, and he is a member of the bar in New York and Massachusetts. Matt attended the Boston Public Schools, Yale College and Yale Law School.

R. Andrew Muns
Andrew is a Vice President in the Fixed Income Division at Banc of America Securities, where he works with the Distressed Debt Trading Desk, providing financial analysis on distressed securities and corporations in financial turnaround. Prior to joining Banc of America Securities, Andrew earned his MBA at Columbia University, where he specialized in finance.

Andrew has also served as an education volunteer in the Peace Corps, teaching mathematics to junior high and high school age children at a public school in the Central African Republic. Andrew’s strong commitment to education also brought him to Caracas, Venezuela where he taught English as a Second Language to children and adults. Andrew returned to Venezuela again to serve as an IT consultant for PriceWaterhouse Coopers, an international accounting and consulting firm. Andrew earned his BA at Northwestern University where he majored in Mathematics.

Wendi Sturgis
Wendi is the Regional Vice President in charge of the Delivery portfolio for the North America Commercial Applications group within Oracle Consulting. In this role, she is responsible for the delivery and client satisfaction for a 250M dollar business and leads a group of approximately 110 account and project managers. Prior to joining Oracle, Wendi was the GVP of WW Operations and Finance for Gartner Consulting. Wendi has held leadership positions at Sawyer Media, Scient and PriceWaterhouse. While at Scient, Wendi was the Vice President of Operations and led Scient's creative, technical and strategic teams’ growth on the East Coast.

Wendi is a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology and is active in the alumni community, supporting the Georgia Tech Foundation and the Alexander Tharpe Fund. She is also an active supporter of not for profits in New York City including: Sanctuary for Families, the New York Public Library, the Robin Hood Foundation and Edwin Gould Services for Children and Families.
