Portola Family Connections, Human Resources Capacity Build

What was your Taproot Foundation project?

Since 1993, Portola Family Connections (PFC) has worked with residents to provide family support and community building, as well as to address neighborhood concerns and develop concrete solutions. PFC turned to the Taproot Foundation for help in identifying key areas to strengthen their current HR function in order to continue to grow and meet the expanding needs of the community the organization serves.

What was your team experience?

My Taproot Foundation team was comprised of an amazing group of HR professionals. Each member provides a valuable perspective—a true testament to their diverse background and extensive HR experience.

What was your Taproot Foundation project experience?

Working with the Taproot Foundation as a pro bono consultant provides me with the opportunity to shine in my area of expertise while also developing my skills and knowledge in other areas. While I volunteer with other organizations in different capacities, the Taproot Foundation allows me to expand my professional network and gain invaluable experience in the world of strategic HR. It is a fulfilling opportunity that fits into my busy professional schedule.

What were the biggest challenges?

My biggest challenge on this project was trying to help the client narrow their focus to embrace a more focused HR function.

How can the business community and nonprofit sector strengthen one another?

I believe that nonprofits can help businesses connect to the local community and realize the opportunity for social responsibility. At the same time, businesses can help nonprofits gain a competitive edge through proven techniques in order to establish financial stability, inspire growth, and create an environment to engage and retain employees and volunteers.

How have you grown from your pro bono work?

Through Taproot Foundation and the Portola Family Connections Project, I have been able to further develop myself as an invaluable asset in strategic HR planning while also igniting my entrepreneurial spirit. As a result of working on this project, I am now a better, more diverse and well-rounded HR consultant. I recently moved to San Francisco from San Diego and, through my experience with the Taproot Foundation, have been able to expand my network and gain inside exposure to established HR professionals in the Bay Area.

What do you do when you’re not doing pro bono?

I am also an avid amateur photographer and enjoy traveling, good food, and volunteering! I have a soft spot for animals and have also worked with the Education Department at the San Diego Wild Animal Park.
