Case Study: Chevron
Designing and kicking of a brand new in-house program
CHALLENGE
With limited internal staff resources and no existing program, Chevron came to the Taproot Foundation to launch a brand new pro bono program - beginning with a group of pilot projects. The initial pilot projects needed to demonstrate the idea of pro bono while preparing Chevron to scale out the program in the future.
APPROACH
The Taproot Foundation began with an assessment of the main capacity building needs of Chevron’s target community partners and an evaluation of the company’s employee skill resources. Taproot then developed tools and templates to facilitate turn-key project implementation, including employee volunteer recruitment and screening, nonprofit partner vetting, intake, and management, and program oversight design. These tools were created to ensure seamless project launch, as well as lay the foundation for a larger, scaled program. Each step of the pilot launch was designed with Chevron’s strategic goals and desired impact in mind.
RESULT
Chevron anticipates launching pilot projects in 2010. These projects will reach target community partners in the local San Francisco Bay Area and will engage employees from multiple departments within Chevron. The program design only requires part-time oversight from one Public Affairs employee, and lays a solid foundation for Chevron to expand the program in the future.
