Case Study: Target Redesigns School Libraries

Target’s team members volunteer to support schools across the country.

The Opportunity

Education is our guests’ number one priority and one of the most important indicators of a child’s success.   But education in America needs help.

  • Nearly half of kindergartners come to school unprepared to learn
  • If children don’t learn to read by age 9, chances are they’ll never catch up
  • 1 in 3 teens will not graduate high school
  • Education budget cuts have resulted in fewer opportunities for students and fewer resources for classrooms and schools.

Target Volunteers School Library Makeovers combine our commitment to education with our passion for volunteerism. In partnership with Heart of America Foundation, we’re helping schools in need and creating inspiring spaces for children to learn and grow.

Target’s Pro Bono Investment

This year, Target stores and distribution centers will donate books and make over libraries in local elementary schools nationwide. The program leverages the size, expertise and spirit of our workforce through an array of year-round opportunities for Target team members to get involved with local schools. Opportunities range from donating books and volunteering at local schools, to executing complete library makeovers utilizing the world-class design and construction expertise of our Property Development team through pro bono services.

The Impact

Successful School Library Makeovers across the country have demonstrated the positive impact of the project on students, teachers, schools and communities. Given the size and geographic span of Target’s workforce, the potential for impact on America’s schools is significant.
