Taproot Role: Strategy Associate
Pro Bono Client: Operation Access
Project: Strategic Scorecard

The Project:
"Operation Access serves uninsured individuals who do not have the means to pay for outpatient surgery. With over 550 medical volunteers, twenty-two participating hospitals, and sixty referring clinics they are able to greatly improve the lives of people within our local communities. Our objective was to design and develop a quarterly strategic scorecard monitoring and measuring the performance of key attributes."

The Team:
"Our Taproot team was high collaborative, professional, friendly and patient as we marched toward our project goals. Also - we worked very well remotely and independently with a shared sense of accountability (and trust) that our individual work would come together at key check-points. At the end of the project, a very clear appreciation for one another was mutually understood and I am very proud of our team effort."

The Work:
"Several volunteer activities have a 1/2 day, 1 day or a weekend duration and the reward behind those efforts is immediately realized as the output is noticeably tangible. In the Taproot pro bono project, however, the journey of working together week-to-week was a consistent reminder this was not a typical volunteer activity, but a project that required a steady pace, energy and focus."

Challenges:
"A key challenge, I felt, was blending the right mix of detail and effort with the requirements of the non-profit organization. Although Taproot does provide excellent toolkits of collateral/material that can be leveraged, it's the consulting acumen that needs to carry forward to really understand the client's needs, bridge knowledge gaps, challenge traditional thought on measuring performance and customize the Taproot templates to match specific client goals."

Cross Sector:
"I think information sharing or data management between non-profit organizations can support key initiatives. I believe that clusters of non-profits have similar service aims toward specific individuals and I think their programs can support or complement one another to elevate their overall impact to the individual's need and community. High quality data points and attributes could help non-profits refocus, refresh and recalibrate their efforts, increase capital, manage allocations and utilize limited resources to improve processes, service execution and cost management. So I'm a big fan for sound data management practices and collaboration."

The Impact:
"The impact we had on our non-profit client was two-fold in my mind. The primary impact was delivering the strategic scorecard, which helped the Board and management team have the capability to monitor and measure the performance of key areas such as cash flow, expenses, service offerings, operations and market penetration. The secondary impact, in my opinion, was raising the connectivity between the Board members and management team through the project work. The strategic scorecard improved the alignment of expectations between both parties and ensured their attention was focus on the same goals. With better forecast mechanisms, the Board and management team can make informed decisions together that will shape the direction of the organization - especially in these times, it's very important."

Personal Growth:
"I enjoy the experience when working with great team members and was fortunate to have worked with 'best-in-class' professionals. They were excellent and I learned a great amount from them."

Outside Taproot:
"I love basketball - watching, playing and talking about basketball are great activities for me. I also enjoy reading a variety of materials from action/adventure fiction, biographies (currently Snowball - W.Buffett) and SQL Server textbooks to advance the data skills."
